Without a doubt, running helps you lose weight. In fact, it probably does a better job at reducing overall body size than any other exercise on the planet.
Not only will you lose body fat by running, but you’ll also lose a little bit of lean body mass as well. This is more of a problem for extremely long distance runners, but it does play a small factor if you’re running every day. If you’re looking for that long, lean look, then this is not a problem, and you should embrace running whole-heartedly.
If you want to avoid this loss of lean muscle mass, then running every second day will provide you with all the benefits that running has to offer, while limiting any loss of muscle. This will also be a bit easier on your joints!
An average person will burn about 100 calories every mile while running. This makes it one of the absolute best exercises in terms of calorie burning.
Running Alone Doesn’t Necessarily Mean You’ll Lose Weight
When people introduce running into their lives on a regular basis, they often unconsciously start eating more as their body has begun to use more calories than normal during the course of the day. It’s very important to be aware of this, and avoid this at all costs.
Running without a healthy diet is very counterproductive when your goal is to lose fat. If you don’t consume less calories that you burn, you will not lose weight, no matter how much you run. You could run every day for 3 full hours and still not lose weight if you’re eating an excessive amount of food.
So, I should add this condition onto my original statement. Does running help you lose weight? Yes – but only if you’re eating properly!
FIT
Fit is an acronym that you should remember if you’re wanting to start a running routine. This acronym was dreamed up by the American Heart Association and I think it’s perfect for all those who are wanting to reap the rewards of running. ‘F’ stands for how frequently you exercise per week. To lose more weight, run more often. ‘I’ stands for intensity, and is there to remind you of how intensely you’re exercising. To see better results, simply increase your running intensity. ‘T’ stands for time spent exercising. There is a minimum threshold that you must surpass in order to see any fat loss results. This minimum is around 20 minutes for most people, and the longer the run, the more weight you’ll lose.
