Ryan Gosling has never really been known for having a lean, ripped body. He’s never had a stomach that was swooned over by women or envied by men. That is, not until his latest movie was released. What am I talking about? Crazy Stupid Love.
I know what you’re thinking.
It sounds like a really generic, overdone (not to mention lame) chick-flick that would provide absolutely no entertainment for guys.
Not true.
I had the distinct pleasure of watching this movie last weekend (my girlfriend forced me… err, bribed me), and I can honestly say its one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a long, long time. Without committing any spoiler offenses, I’ll only say that it contains perhaps the funniest scene I’ve seen in a movie since the turn of the century.
Comedy isn’t the only thing that sticks out in this movie. Ryan Gosling’s newly chiseled body has also been a focus since he first appeared shirtless in the film.
Naturally, everyone wants to know what he did to get in such great shape, and many are surprised he only had a couple of months to prep for the role. Without further ado, let’s look at Ryan Goslings Workout for Crazy Stupid Love.
[box type="blue"]Gosling used the principles of this program by concentrating on adding lean muscle mass in the right places, and did short, but extremely intense cardio workouts to cut down the fat. [/box]
Most people will tell you to follow a bodybuilder style workout to improve your physique. What’s the problem with that? Well, these workouts place a huge amount of focus on your legs. Bodybuilders preach that the amount of hormones released by heavy leg workouts make it easier to gain muscle. While this may true, working out like this builds massive legs. This is not what Ryan Gosling, or any other Hollywood stars do to look good.
They concentrate on putting on muscle in the right places, in the right proportions. This way, they’ll look good both shirtless and fully clothed. Of particular importance is working the upper back. This will give you a ‘V’ shape (it also has the nice side effect of making your waist appear smaller).
Ryan Gosling’s workout included something called the shrink wrap technique to get his dense, defined body for Crazy Stupid Love. For a quick overview of this technique, click on the image below and scroll down to video #3.
Incline Dumbbell Fly’s: 3 sets of 8 reps
Weighted Dips: 3 sets of 12 reps
Weighted Pull-ups: 3 sets of 10 reps
Skull Crushers: 3 sets of 12 reps
Weighted Chin-ups: 3 sets of 10 reps
Arnold Shoulder Dumbbell Press: 3 sets of 10 reps
Bent-Over Barbell Row: 3 sets of 8 reps
Side Lateral Dumbbell Raises: 3 sets of 12 reps
HIIT workout running outside (not the same as running on a treadmill): 30 seconds all-out sprint/ 90 seconds of walking continued for 20-25 minutes.
5 minutes of the Plank (with breaks).
This workout got the 6’1 Star down to 180 lbs for his role in Crazy Stupid Love. His body fat percentage was around 10% – which is particularly impressive for the relatively short amount of time he had to get ready for the role and his lack of fitness before it.

If you’re interested in getting a body like Ryan Gosling, take a look at this program designed for achieving the lean Hollywood look. It’s a really solid program, and that’s saying a lot seeing as how I am notoriously fussy about endorsing anything on this site (seriously, just look around or ask my colleagues).
(What kind of look is this program aimed at achieving? Think Ryan Reynolds in Blade, Brad Pitt in Troy, Taylor Lautner in Twilight, Mark Wahlberg, etc)
